Annual Plant Sale
History of the Plant Sale
The parish of Holy Trinity has been held an annual plant sale as a fund raiser for our Church, for over sixty years.
It was recently discovered from a former parishioner (currently residing elsewhere), whose family were long time devoted and active parish members, that our "Annual Plant Sale" had its beginnings in 1939.
Apparently at that time some parish members went to the City of Edmonton and acquired many plants to adorn the Church for Easter Sunday. After Easter they received requests from the community to purchase several of those plants. Seeing that there could be an opportunity for fund raising they again sold plants the next year and so the history of our "Plant Sale" began.
They chose Victoria Day, the May long weekend, to hold the sale. In those early days the church members grew the plants for the sale themselves, in their homes or small green houses.
This sale has grown from these humble beginnings to the present offering of over one hundred thousand individual plants, supplied by a local greenhouse. Our Plant Sale is well-supported by the community, and all parishioners help out in one way or another. It continues to be held on the Friday and Saturday of the May long weekend.
